H1N1 Vaccine NOT Available at CUPHD
The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Has Not Received Shipments of the H1N1 Vaccine
Champaign, IL – The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) has not received the H1N1 vaccine at this time. Due to misinformation, CUPHD is receiving numerous calls and walk-ins from the public requesting the H1N1 vaccination. A press conference will be scheduled once the vaccine has been received.
Although the State of Illinois has received 57,000 doses of the H1N1 FluMist, none has been shipped to Champaign County. The first doses that CUPHD receives will be provided to healthcare workers under the age of 49 who meet the additional healthrelated guidelines and who have already pre-registered through their employers.
CUPHD anticipates starting school-based vaccination clinics at the beginning of November and public clinics by the end of November.

Interested women who are unable to attend one of the scheduled enrollment days are encouraged to contact IBCCP at the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, located at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign, at 217-373-9281 or toll free at 1-877-811-0193 for additional information.
“Breast and cervical cancer are serious concerns for all women”, said Cathy Propst, Program Coordinator of IBCCP at CUPHD. “Statistics show that as a woman ages her chance of developing breast cancer increases. Mammograms, pap tests, breast, and pelvic exams promote early detection and increase the chance for successful treatment and overall survival rates for women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer.”
Other than some forms of skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the United States. Last year, over 40,000 women died from breast cancer and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in their lifetime.
Where cervical cancer was once a leading cause of death among women, today deaths from cervical cancer have decreased largely due to women having access to regular pap tests and pelvic exams. Regular pap tests are a crucial tool in identifying pre-cancer before it turns into cancer. Last year over 11,000 women in the United States were diagnosed with cervical cancer, and over 3,500 died from the disease.

University of Illinois Basketball Players to Receive Seasonal Flu Shot Tomorrow
IDPH Director, Dr. Damon T. Arnold, to Administer Shots
Champaign, IL – Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director, Dr. Damon T. Arnold, will host a press conference September 24, 2009 from 3:00pm – 4:00pm at the Richard T. Ubben Basketball Complex in the men’s practice gym located at 1750 South Fourth Street in Champaign. Dr. Arnold is making a state-wide tour encouraging Illinoisans to get their seasonal flu shot.
The program will highlight speakers including IL Department of Public Health Director, Dr. Damon T. Arnold; University of Illinois Director of McKinley Health Center, Dr. Robert Palinkas; Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Administrator, Julie A. Pryde; University of Illinois Director of Sports Medicine, Al Martindale, and the University of Illinois Women's Basketball Coach, Jolette Law who will be addressing the importance of receiving seasonal flu shots. Several men’s and women’s U of I basketball players will be receiving their seasonal flu shots on-site.
According to IDPH, this fall’s flu season is expected to be worse because the new H1N1 flu strain will be circulating at the same time as the seasonal flu. The single best way for a person to protect themselves and their loved ones against the flu is to get vaccinated.
Parking is located directly south of the Ubben Basketball Complex with entrance off of St. Mary's Road. Additional metered parking is available in the lot between Ubben and the Bielfeldt Athletics Administration Building.
