Comprehensive Sex Education Programming

Comprehensive Sex Education Programming

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District's Wellness and Health Promotion Division is a grantee of the Illinois Department of Human Services' Personal Responsibility Education Program or PREP. Through the PREP grant, CUPHD's health educators teach the Making Proud Choices! curriculum in area middle schools and high schools. Typically, this consists of a health educator having a guest speaking role during students' regularly scheduled health class. Making Proud Choices! is an 8 hour, age-appropriate, evidence-based sexual health curriculum for 12-18 year-olds. At the completion of the MPC curriculum, youth will have:

  • Increased knowledge about prevention of HIV, other STIs, and pregnancy
  • More positive attitudes/beliefs about birth control and condom use
  • Increased confidence in their ability to negotiate safer sex and to use condoms correctly
  • Stronger intentions to use birth control and condoms if they do have sex
  • A lower incidence of HIV/STI risk-associated sexual behaviors
  • A stronger sense of pride and responsibility in making a difference in their lives

In addition to the PREP grant, CUPHD has additional awards and funding for sex education, and can often do shorter programming by request.
