To operate a food or drink establishment or mobile unit, a health permit is required. Prior to a health permit being issued, a facility must go through our plan review process. The purpose of plan review is to verify that an establishment’s structure, equipment, capacities, and proposed food handling are in compliance with the food code. The code was designed toward preventing foodborne illness. With good planning, every food or drink establishment can have built-in sanitation that benefits the owner(s) and meets current public health regulations.
Plans must be approved by this department before construction or remodeling can begin.
For minor remodeling or equipment replacement under the same ownership, please contact your inspector so that he/she can make a determination about whether plan review is required.
Annual health permits for Champaign or Urbana expire on April 30th. Annual health permits for other areas of Champaign County expire on November 30th. Per agreement, we also issue city food licenses on behalf of the cities of Champaign and Urbana.
Health permits are not transferable from one owner to another.
