Natural Environment
Many federal, state, local agencies and universities create maps, information and data that could be useful to citizens concerned about quality of the natural environment. In addition, parks and recreational areas are important resources to promote outdoor activity and improve health.
Quality of the Natural Environment
Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found all over the U.S. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency oversees the efforts to reduce exposure to Radon in the United States. In addition, local agencies sometimes provide test kits for use by homeowners in their area. Here is an interactive map of radon test results, mitigation professionals, and measurement professionals in Illinois.
Childhood lead poisoning has significant effects on the health of children and on community health. Lead has adverse effects on nearly all organ systems in the body. In Illinois blood lead levels are declining, but efforts continue to reduce the risk of lead poisoning in children.
