Disease Surveillance
Disease surveillance involves counting, mapping and reporting cases of illness, mortality, injuries, and potential health risks. This would include communicable diseases like measles, West Nile virus and HIV/AIDS. These illnesses are all known as "reportable" diseases and local health departments help track these for their local area. Cancer cases are reported separately through the Illinois Cancer Registry. Many other conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke as well as obesity, injuries and cases of mental illness are reported through a wide variety of systems and agencies. The lead agency is the Illinois Department of Public Health, and in particular the Illinois Center for Health Statistics Database and Datafile Resource Guide.
