More Women are Eligible for Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an observance meant to draw attention to a disease that claims tens of thousands of lives each year in the U.S.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer. American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates for 2005 indicate 211,240 women in the U.S. were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,410 died from the disease. Health Officials Warn Consumers Not to Eat Fresh Spinach, and to Report Any Sales of Fresh Spinach to the Local Health Department

On September 19, the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed that a north-central Illinois resident was infected with the E. coli 0157:H7 bacterium. This infection is part of a national outbreak attributed to eating fresh spinach. So far, 114 cases of illness related to this outbreak have been reported in several states. Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Opens New Men's Clinic; Services Include Free Prostate Blood Test

Today begins Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, a national program of the Prostate Cancer Education Council. Public Health is responding to the local problem of access to prostate cancer tests by opening a Men's Clinic which will include free prostate cancer screenings to men age 40 and up. The clinic will also offer tests for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

Hospitals and Other First Responders to Practice Response to an Infectious Disease Scenario

In an exercise that will last several days, Champaign County health, safety and emergency preparedness personnel will practice their plans for responding to a local outbreak of infectious disease. Volunteer Dentists Will Offer Free Dental Exams

Several local dentists are teaming up with Central Illinois Dental Education and Services, Public Health and the Champaign County Health Care Consumers to bring free dental exams to local school children. Children in Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grades are required to have the dental exams for school.
