Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Celebrates National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day with Special Testing Clinics

Champaign, IL - February 7, 2008 marks the seventh annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) is responding to the impact of HIV and AIDS in local African American Communities by offering special testing clinics throughout the week. Sites will include the Nesbitt Cultural Center at the University of Illinois on Wednesday, February 6 from 9:00am - 2:00pm; the New Life Church of Faith in Danville on Thursday, February 7 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm; and the Decatur Masonic Temple in Decatur also on Thursday, February 7 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. Safe Kids Champaign County urges parents to childproof homes

Champaign - Each year in the United States, more than 1,800 children ages 4 and under die from accidental injuries in the home, and more than 3 million children ages 14 and under are treated in emergency rooms for accidental injuries occurring at home. Most fatal injuries at home are caused by suffocation, fire and burns, drowning, choking, falls, poisoning or firearms discharged unintentionally.

Safe Kids Champaign County urges parents and caregivers to check their homes at least once a year for basic safety precautions. Beginning December 4, All Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics to Offer the Blood Test

A new service will soon be available at all Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinics of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. Beginning Monday, December 4, 2006, Public Health will offer herpes serologic (blood) testing during all STD clinics.

Public Health STD clinics are offered on a walk-in basis on Tuesdays from 1-5 p.m. and Thursdays, 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. at the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Main Office, 710 N. Neil St., in Champaign. An STD Clinic for men only is also available at the same location from 4-6 p.m. every Monday. Flu Shots Are Recommended for Children Six Months to 59 Months of Age And Those With Chronic Illnesses

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Division of Maternal and Child Health Management will hold a pediatric flu shot clinic on Wednesday, November 29 from 3:30-7 p.m. This clinic will provide shots to any child 6 months of age and older, but will target children who are most at risk for complications due to flu infection.

Health District Infectious Disease Prevention Staff Are Recognized for Their Work on HIV and STD Prevention

Two Champaign-Urbana Public Health District employees received the state Red Ribbon Award this week at the 15th Annual HIV/STD Conference in Springfield, IL. The award, given by the Illinois Department of Public Health HIV/AIDS Section, recognizes "outstanding individuals and groups involved with HIV/STD advocacy, prevention or care services."
